What is the Pop District?

The Pop District is a major new cultural and economic development project, spearheaded by the Andy Warhol Museum, that intends to transform a six-block section of the museum’s neighborhood on Pittsburgh’s North Shore into a thriving hub for expansive cultural programming, creative workforce development, and ultimately a new and enhanced cultural tourism destination. The project aims to use the power of public art, digital media production, and live music to create a museum-led destination in the city where Andy Warhol was born.

What drove the development of the Pop District?

In alignment with the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh's strategy to turn the museums "inside out," The Warhol is taking a national leadership role in reimagining how institutions become more welcoming and relevant to real needs in communities. In March 2019, the Hillman Foundation and Richard King Mellon Foundation provided the funding to begin "pre-design" planning for The Pop District.

Where is The Pop District?

Centered at the intersection of Sandusky Street and East General Robinson Street on Pittsburgh's eastern North Shore, The Pop District is six square blocks surrounding The Andy Warhol Museum, connected to both Downtown Pittsburgh via The Andy Warhol Bridge and to Pittsburgh historic Northside neighborhoods.

What will The Pop District feature?

The Pop District includes three distinct elements: a real estate expansion; a public art initiative; and a workforce development program. Real estate expansion focuses on a new flagship live performance and special event venue. Public art projects are deployed throughout the district, with the first completed along Rose Way (alleyway) and the former Rosa Villa site adjacent to the museum. The workforce program launched in August 2021 with three components: a creative agency, a digital marketing certificate program, and youth-focused 21st century skillset programs led by the museum's Learning & Public Engagement department.

How long will The Pop District take to develop?

The Pop District is a long-term, multi-phase project. The Warhol is developing The Pop District in two phases. The first phase (starting in May 2022) focuses on launching and growing its workforce development program, scaling its public art initiative, and designing/planning a new flagship live performance and events venue. The second phase (starting in 2024) will feature new venue construction, program scale, and the growth and development of The Pop District as a global arts and culture destination.
